IN THE NEWS: Forest Fires
Firefighters are battling to contain several large blazes in southern California where more than 26 square miles in four counties were destroyed in recent days. Evacuations are in effect around L.A. as the strong Santa Ana winds and drought conditions turn small brush fires into dangerous wildfires.

ECOSYSTEMS: Value of Biodiversity
A new University of Colorado study suggests that greater genetic diversity helps protect some species from emerging wildlife diseases. In the study, American toads that lived with gray tree frogs reduced their chances of parasitic infections known to cause limb malformations.
